What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a condition which affects your ability to fall asleep, or to stay asleep for the duration of the night. It also includes sleeping too lightly, or waking multiple times.
It is usual for everyone to have less than adequate sleep from time to time, for different reasons, but if there is a pattern, then it is quite possible that you have symptoms of insomnia.
Someone suffering from lack of adequate quality sleep will often experience daytime sleepiness and a lack of energy. If Insomnia has existed for a longer period of time, it can result in irritability and depression, difficulty with attentiveness and learning, memory problems, and significant loss of energy.
These symptoms of quality sleep deprivation over the long term, can effect education and job performance, relationships with colleagues and family members, and can be the precurser to other health problems such as anxiety and depression.
Lack of quality sleep is especially dangerous when doing certain tasks such as driving or operating machinery. Alertness and judgment are affected.
Insomnia may be experienced over short terms in our lives due to upsetting events that occur, resulting in stress which can affect our sleeping patterns. These episodes of Insomnia will usually correct themselves.
If Insomnia is being experienced over the longer term, then advice and treatment should be sought. It is important for your quality of life and well-being that adequate and quality sleep is a made a health priority.
